Introductory Course: Level 1 Intensive

For Adults

Introductory Course: Level 1 Intensive

Delta Sculling Center (DSC), located at Stockton’s Buckley Cove Park, offers comprehensive sculling instruction for adults of all experience levels. Established in 2013, DSC emphasizes mastery of boat-handling skills and values sculling as the principal path to excellence in all types of rowing.

Description: A small group, four-session course designed for those who have never picked up an oar. The curriculum covers technique in stable single and two-person boats, rowing terminology, safety practices, boat handling and navigation of local waterways. If you are interested in registering for this clinic, please complete the interest form on the right and we will get back to you with details.

Schedule: July 21-24 5:45 to 7:45 AM, Monday – Friday  (Friday will be an optional day in case of postponement earlier in the week due to bad weather.)

Format: Four sessions, each lasting 2 hours, conducted with expert coaching at Buckley Cove and on the Stockton Deep Water Channel. Ratio: one instructor to two participants.

Cost: $280 or $500 for two participants (if you sign up with a buddy), which includes:

  • Two optional Saturday bonus sessions with DSC Novice Masters following Level I—extra opportunities to build skills and confidence on the water.
  • Use of DSC equipment during Level 1 and the trial Saturdays.
  • Opportunities to become certified in a single shell and participate in other DSC programs.

Eligibility:

  • Open to adults aged 18 and over with no prior rowing experience. Experienced rowers are encouraged to explore other DSC programs; email info@deltasculling.org for options.
  • To help ensure a safe and positive experience, we’ll ask you to accomplish a brief functional assessment on your own before your first class. This is simply to get a sense of how your body moves and to confirm that rowing will be a good fit for you at this time. We’ll help you check for basic mobility—like being able to do a low overhead squat, a hamstring stretch, move from sitting or kneeling to standing on your own, etc. Rowing is a physically active sport that can challenge your body in new ways, especially as you’re learning. Our boats and equipment are built to safely support a range of sizes, typically accommodating individuals up to about 240 lbs for those over 6 feet tall. Your safety is our priority. If we determine that this class isn’t the best fit right now, we’ll be happy to issue a full refund and talk with you about other possible options.
  • Able to swim 50 meters in deep water, tread water for 10 minutes, don a life jacket in the water, and self-rescue onto the dock.
  • Submission of DSC and USRowing liability waivers is mandatory before the first session.
