Novice Masters

Novice Masters

June 5 – August 30, 2025

When you are ready to challenge yourself, sign up for the Novice Masters lessons.  The goal is to teach you the skills needed to complete your “Captain’s Evaluation”; a skills and knowledge evaluation that shows you are:

1) adequately safe to row a recreational single without a safety launch alongside, and

2) generally tend to require less supervision on the water.

You will participate on Thursday evenings to become more adept at the sculling technique on the indoor rowing machine (erg) and at using the erg as a fitness tool.  Thursday evening practices may also take place on the water depending on the light and weather. On Saturday mornings you will join a group on the water to put what you are learning on land into practice in the boat (weather permitting).  You will begin in a double-boat with an expert buddy to help teach you and steer your boat. Then we will help you progress to a single-person, narrower recreational shell with pontoons. As your skills improve you will row a recreational single independently.  The learning time on the water is very individualized so participants can progress at their own rate.

Cost $600. Fees are all-inclusive – no extra fees for renting equipment. All equipment is provided. Proceeds from this program help support our programs for veterans, adaptive
rowers, and youth.
